General:

  1. 10th graders report to assigned CAHSEE rooms at 7:45 a.m. tomorrow and Wednesday. Bring two #2 pencils each day. No wireless devices will be allowed at any time during the testing period. (Laurence)
  2. The spring blood drive is next Monday. Sign up donate in room 214 or with a Key Club member. (McNulty)
  3. Check to see if you have a library fine. Lists are posted in the Library or near the Auditor’s Office. If you do, you need to pay it before you pick up prom ticket. Don’t be disappointed! (Kellerman)
  4. The winter issue of Calliope, Paly’s literary magazine, is now available for $3 in room 202. See the best in fiction, poetry, art and photography. (Sharp)
  5. If you are a junior or senior who went to JLS, Dr. McEvooy would like to invite you to lunch on Friday, March 14 in the ERC, to discuss your reflections on your transition from middle school to high school.   1. Come learn more about Brown Ledge Gap Year today at 1:30 (6th period).  This is a new gap-year program in which students are trained in video, audio and photography at our base near Burlington, Vermont. (Cernobori)
  2. Interested in Middle College at Foothill? Come meet with the middle college staff on Friday, March 14 during 4th period in the CCC. Get permission from your 4th period teacher first. (Sinton)

Scholarships

Experience Berkeley/Stiles Hall Community Service Agency - High School African-American Juniors with a 3.5 GPA or better. Participants receive funding for transportation, room and board and the opportunity to attend panel programs during July 10-12 and July 31-Aug 2, 2008 featuring current students, faculty and alumni, workshops on personal statements, academic planning, and financial aid sessions. Program is privately funded and applications must be postmarked or faxed by 03/14/2008. Decision letters will be mailed no later than 05/15/2008. Foothill & DeAnza College Scholarships - Chancellor’s Awards - Seniors from Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties who are interested in attending Foothill or DeAnza College may apply for a $1500 scholarship by completing an application, submitting high school transcript with class ranking and a one page essay or personal statement. San Jose GI Forum Scholarship Foundation - Hispanic Seniors or those of Mexican American decent, residing in Santa Clara County, planning to attend a 2 - or 4 - year college in the fall. The foundation awarded 26 scholarships in 2007 totalling $26,100. Applicants considered on their academic achievement, career goals, community and school activities and financial need. Must have a minimum GPA of 2.5. Candidates must submit application, official school transcript, photo, biographical data sheet, and essay (1-2pgs Typed), parents Fed. Hispanic Heritage Youth Awards - Seniors of Hispanic heritage with a minimum GPA of 2.75 are encouraged to apply for this award. Criteria include: U.S. citizenship or permanent residence, personal statement and letters of recommendation and reference. Numerous awards available in Business, Engineering and Mathematics, Education, Leadership, Journalism, and Sports. $3000, $2000 and $1000 scholarships will be awarded. The Campaign for College Opportunity/College Access Foundation of California/The California Dept. of Education - High school students may enter the scholarship contest by designing a 14” x 22” poster or TV ad on CD/DVD to answer the question “Why should California leaders save you a spot in college?”. Cabrillo Civic Club - Seniors of Portuguese descent on father’s or mother's side, who are citizens or permanent residents of USA: Participation in at least three extra-curricular activities while in high school. 3.5 min. Unlocking Doors – A Scholarship for Women - San Francisco Bay Area Senior women who are the first in their family who intend on attending college and demonstrate financial need (parent/guardiancombined annual income not to exceed $45,000/year. Applicant must live in one of 9 Bay Area counties which include San Mateo and Santa Clara, be the first generation in their family to attend a four year university or college, and be a U.S. citizen or legal resident. Scholarship Award is $1000. No minimum GPA or SAT/ACT score requirement, and open to all races, heritages, and ethniticies. Applicant must submit application, statement of purpose, letter or recommendation, copy of academic transcript and a copy of SAT/ACT scores. Eiro Yamada Memorial Scholarship - Seniors who are a direct descendant of Japanese American veteran who served in WWII or a descendant once removed of a Japanese American serviceman or servicewomen killed in action during WWII (such as a grand-niece or grand nephew). Applicant must be an entering or current undergraduate or graduate student in a trade school, community college or 4 year college or university. Applicant must submit essay on one of three topics, and submit cover sheet with personal contact information. A personal statement is optional.  Ayn Rand Institute – Anthem Essay Writing Contest - Essay writing contest for 9th and 10th graders based on Ayn Rand’s novelette “Anthem”. Applicants choose one of three topics to write about. First prize winner receives $2000; Five 2nd place winners received $500. Essays must range between 600 and 1200 words in length, typewritten and doublespaced. Essays will be judged on style and content, emphasizing writing that is clear, articulate, and logically organized.
